In Suzuki lessons, there are three people involved in the learning process — the student, the teacher, and the parent or caregiver. The collaboration and teamwork involved between these three people is called the Suzuki Triangle ; each person has their own role and responsibilities with the goal of cultivating a learning environment that is steeped in love, discipline, and collaboration.

What is the role of each person in the Suzuki Triangle?

The Student

As the student in the Suzuki Triangle, your responsibility is to come to each lesson prepared with your practice assignments and ready to learn the next new thing! This means that you practice your instrument daily, you listen to your Suzuki recordings, and you try your very best in lessons and in-home practice.

The Teacher

As teachers, our role is to guide the student in an engaging and fun way, support the parent throughout the practice process, and give clear directions to both student and parent that can be easily replicated at home. We only see the child for a short time each week, so we pack a lot of learning into your lessons!

Getting an Instrument -- Should I rent or buy my violin?

The huge and awaiting day has happened and your child is ready to get their first real violin or viola! Since every young student starts out on a box or foam violin, this has been a very exciting moment that they have been looking forward to since day one!

Now that your child has graduated from the box violin, they will need a full "outfit" which includes the following: violin or viola, bow, case, cleaning cloth, and rosin. You can either rent or purchase your instrument when your child is ready for this step. Both renting and buying are good options, but it all depends what works best for you.

Teacher tip: Getting the right size instrument is important for your child's comfort while playing. Your child will be measured either by their private instructor or by a string shop attendant to ensure they get the appropriate size instrument.

When a young child is starting their first lesson on violin or viola, you might think that the first step as the parent is to get them the actual instrument. But stop right there! In many studios, the first step of a child learning violin or viola is actually to start on a box/foam violin and not the real, beautiful wooden instrument. It might seem strange at first to think that the first lessons are not with the real thing; however there are many benefits to starting with a foam instrument.

The foam violin allows students to understand the basics of how to hold, handle and care for a violin, before they actually start working with such a delicate instrument. Here are the several reasons that Suzuki violin and viola educators at Lakewood Suzuki Strings are strong advocates of the foam violin:

CARE

The foam violin allows the student to learn how to take care of the instrument before getting a real violin or viola. Musical instruments are very fragile, and must be respected and handled with care. Instead, the child learns how to take care of the foam violin without an actual instrument ever being harmed.

Your instrument will need a yearly check up from your rental shop or a trusted Luthier to ensure that there are no open seams or cracks in the violin, which affect the instrument’s sound. Strings need to be replaced at least once a year, and the bow will need to be rehaired once a year.
